Korean Weekly Expressions (Week 14)

 

 

…ㄴ다던데요 I heard that…, is it true? 

* You heard something or rumor from others but not sure if the rumor is true

 

그녀는 매운 음식을 좋아한다던데 맞아요? I heard that she likes spicy food, is it true?

 

그들이 사귄다던데 사실인지 모르겠어요. 

I heard that they are dating, and I don’t know if it is true.

 

 

…ㄴ다면 let’s say that … (hypothetical) 

 

다른 나라에 갈 수 있다면 어디에 가고 싶어요? 

Let’s say you can go to another country, where do you want to go to?

 

지금 쇼핑을 한다면 뭐를 사고 싶어요? 

Let’s say you go shopping now, what do you want to buy?

 

 

…ㄴ/은 다음에             after …ing

Similar expressions) …ㄴ/은 후에 after …ing, …고 나서after…ing

 

아이들을 학교에 데려다 준 다음에 바로 출근해야 돼요. 

I should go straight to work after dropping my kids off at school.

       

차를 탄 후에 멀미가 나지 않기 위해 딱딱한 음식을 씹어 보세요. 

After getting in the car, try chewing hard food in order not to have motion sickness.

After arriving in Korea, what do you think you’ll do first?

…ㄴ/는데다가 ~도  not only … but also ~

She’s not only pretty but also has a great personality, so she’s very popular among her friends.

 

그는 공부도 잘하는데다가 운동도 잘해서 친구들한테 인기가 많아요.

He’s not only good at studying but also good at sports, so he’s very popular among his friends.

 

 

…ㄴ 마음으로 with a …heart

즐거운 마음으로 공부하고 싶어요. I want to study with a joyful heart.

 

식사할 때는 감사한 마음으로 먹어야 해요.

You should eat with a grateful heart when you have a meal.

한국에 온 소감이 어때요? How do you feel about coming to Korea?

 

연예인에게 말한 소감이 어때요? How do you feel about having spoken to the celebrity?

 

 

…ㄴ 셈이다 It is basically…, It is practically…, You could say …  

 * It means something is not exactly that way, but close enough to be considered so.

이웃과 자주 연락해서 친구인 셈이에요.

We keep in touch with our neighbor often, so we’re basically friends.

 

어렸을 때부터 서울에 살아서 서울이 고향인 셈이에요.

Since I’ve lived in Seoul since I was young, it’s basically my hometown.

Antonym) …ㄴ 줄 몰랐어요 I didn’t know that…

 

그 사람이 키가 큰 줄 알았어요. I thought the person was tall.

 

그들이 친구인 줄 알았어요. I thought that they were friends.

 

한국 음식이 매운 줄 몰랐어요. I didn’t know that Korean food is spicy.
