Korean Weekly Expression (Week 1)

 

가까이에nearby, close to

 

Adjective) 가깝다 to be nearby, Synonym) 근처에 nearby, Antonym) 멀리 far

 

전철역이 가까이에 있어요. The subway station close to here.

 

집 가까이에 뭐가 있어요? What is close to your house?

 

행복은 생각보다 가까이에 있어요. Happiness is close to us than we think. 

 

 

가끔  sometimes

       

가끔 영화관에 가요. I sometimes go to the cinema.

       

가끔 집에서 공부해요. I sometimes study at home.

 

가끔 한국 음식을 먹어요. I sometimes eat Korean food.

       

 

가능하면 if possible

가능한 많이 as many (or) much as possible

 

가능한 많이 자고 싶어요. I want to sleep as much as possible.

I want to save money as much as possible and go travel to Korea. 

 

가능한 많이 먹고 싶어요. I want to eat as much as possible

 

 

 

가능한 빨리 as soon as possible

Antonym) 가능한 늦게 as late as possible

 

가능한 빨리 한국에 가고 싶어요. I want to go to Korea as soon as possible.

 

가능한 빨리 오세요! Please come as soon as possible!

 

가능한 빨리 숙제를 끝낼 거예요. I will finish my homework as soon as possible.

 

 

가능한 짧게 as short as possible

Antonym) 가능한 길게 as long as possible

가만히 still

 

그는 가만히 있지 못 해요. He can’t stay still.

 

사진을 찍을 테니까 움직이지 말고 가만히 계세요. 

Since I will take a picture, don’t move, and please stay still.

 

날씨가 너무 더워서 가만히 있어도 땀이 나요. 

Because the weather is so hot, I am sweating even though I stay still.

 

 

가만히 놔두다   let someone in peace, let someone alone

 

그 사람을 만나면 가만히 놔두지 않을 거예요. 

If I meet the person, I will not let him in peace.

가장 the most (superlative) 

Synonym) 제일 the most

 

제가 가장 좋아하는 식당은 한식당이에요. My favorite restaurant is Korean restaurant.

 

가장 키 큰 사람이 누구예요? Who is the tallest person?

누구를 제일 좋아해요? Who do you like the most?

 

 

~ 가지고 it is because… (we use this expression in colloquial) 

 

시간이 없어 가지고 숙제를 다 못 했어요. I couldn’t finish my homework because I didn’t have time.

 

음식이 식어 가지고 맛이 없네요. The food is cold, so it is not delicious.

 

 

가지다 to have  

Synonym) 갖다 to have

갖다 is the shorten form of 가지다, and is used more in spoken language. 

 

생일 선물로 뭐를 가지고 싶어요? What do you want to have as a birthday gift?

 

그 아이는 호주머니에 용돈을 가지고 있어요. 

The kid has some pocket money in his pocket.

 

 

가졌다 to have as a physical trait

 

그녀는 빨간 머리를 가졌어요. She has red hair.

 

그는 갈색 눈을 가졌어요. He has brown eyes.

강제로 compulsory, by force, involuntarily

 

강제로 하는 공부는 재미없어요. Involuntarily study is boring.

거기 there or the place (you can’t see physically)

Synonyms) 그 곳 = 그 장소 there or the place (you can’t see physically)

 

내일 거기에서 만나요. See you there tomorrow.

 

어렸을 때 그 장소에서 놀곤 했어요. I used to play at that place when I was a child.

 

 

거꾸로 opposite way, reversed way, inside out, upside down

 

옷을 거꾸로 입었어요. I wore my clothes inside out.

 

거꾸로 말하면 무슨 뜻이에요? What does it mean if I say it in reversed way?

 

컵을 실수로 거꾸로 놓았어요. I put the cup upside down by mistake.

주말에 집에서 쉬거나 영화를 볼 거예요. I'll either rest at home or watch a movie this weekend.

* Used to list one or more possibilities, actions, or things among others; it often implies alternatives or examples without specifying everything. 

음식을 요리해 먹거나 하자. Let’s cook and eat food or something.

 

식당에 가거나 쇼핑하거나 영화 보거나 하자. Lt’s go to a restaurant or go shopping or watch a movie or something.
