Korean Weekly Expressions (Week 3)

 

경험을 쌓다 to build up one’s experience

 

젊을 때 다양한 경험을 는 것이 중요해요.
It is important to gain diverse experiences while you are young.

 

많은 경험을 은 사람은 중요한 결정을 쉽게 할 수 있어요.
Someone with a lot of experience can make important decisions more easily.

 

 

…고 and 

* [A]고 [B] = [A] and [B]; [A] happens first and [B] happens later

Making a list of [A] and [B]; [A] and [B] are not related.

 

주말에 보통 영화를 보 외식하 운동해요. On weekends, I usually watch movies, dine out, and exercise.

I plan to do an internship and travel this vacation to gain some experiences.

* To express doing something just for the sake of a desire, even if that desire is trivial.

 

비행기를 타고 싶어서라도 해외여행을 가려고 해요. I want to travel abroad just to take a flight.

 

건강하게 살고 싶어서라도 몸짱이 되려고 해요. I want to get fit just to live a healthy life.

 

 

…고 싶어요want to …

*…고 싶어요 is used from the first person’s perspective: I, You (singular), We, You (plural)

*…고 싶어 해요 is used from the third person’s perspective: He, She, They

 

그들은 대한민국에 가고 싶어 해요. They want to go to Korea.

 

그는 휴가 때 여행가고 싶어 해요. He wants to go traveling during vacation.

 

Q 뭐를 하고 싶어요? What do you want to do?

 

   A 한국어를 공부하고 싶어요. I want to study Korean.

 

오늘 아무것도 하고 싶지 않아요. I don’t want to do anything today.

 

 

…고 싶어 지다 start wanting to…, start craving for…

 

날씨가 더워서 아이스크림을 먹고 싶어 졌어요. The weather is hot, so I started craving ice cream.

 

한국 문화를 좋아해서 한국에 가고 싶어 졌어요. I started wanting to go to Korea because I like Korean culture

 

 

…고자  For the purpose of…, planning to…, intending to…

…고자 해요plan to…, intend to…

 

* To express intent or goal, similar to "in order to."

Similar expression) …기 위해 in order to…, so as to…

                             

환경을 보호하고자 환경 보호 동아리에 참가했습니다. I joined the environmental protection club to protect the environment.

 

휴가 때 동남아에 가고자 해요. I plan to go to Southeast Asia during my vacation

 

교환 학생으로 대한민국에서 공부하고자 해요. I want to study in South Korea as an exchange student.

 

 

고집(이) 세다 to be stubborn

 

그들은 고집이 센 것 같아요. I think they are stubborn.

 

저희는 고집이 세서 가끔 싸워요. We are stubborn so we sometimes fight.

 

 

…곤 해요 often, usually (habitual action)

* To describe repeated actions or routines

 

시간이 있으면 신문을 읽곤 해요. If I have time, I usually read the newspaper.

 

아침마다 산책을 하 해요.  I usually take a walk every morning.

 

 

…곤 했어요 used to … (Past habit)

* Expresses a past habitual action that is no longer performed

 

저는 어렸을 때 학원에 다니곤 했어요. When I was young, I used to attend an academy.

 

만화책을 많이 읽곤 했어요. I used to read a lot of comic books.

 

자주 요리하곤 했어요. I used to cook a lot.
